The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) is pleased to release the findings of its fifth annual national Canadian Newsroom Diversity Survey today. This year’s voluntary survey collected data about 5,662 journalists from 325 newsrooms across radio, television, digital and print media in Canada. The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) calls on Quebec’s Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), the independent civilian watchdog agency that investigates indices of police misconduct, to immediately examine a spate of press freedom violations by the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) against journalists covering protests. The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) is proud to join more than two dozen Canadian news organizations and industry supporters for the newly-launched ‘Fact Checked’ campaign that aims to fight misinformation by amplifying the value of Canadian journalism. The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) vehemently opposes the recent changes proposed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that would severely limit Canadian journalists’ ability to live and work in the United States. This is not the first time this proposal has been made. This past Sunday, a team of four Al Jazeera journalists and two freelance reporters were killed in a bombing by Israel. In the hours and days since we learned of the killing, we have also received considerable correspondence from members who have expressed their desire to see the CAJ issue a statement condemning the killings.
