Program Summary

Lawyers for Reporters Canada is an initiative of the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), the University of King’s College, and the Canadian Media Lawyers Association (CMLA) that provides pro bono legal support to strengthen an effective and democratic news media ecosystem. The program is modeled after the U.S. Lawyers for Reporters initiative (2020), with strategic advice from the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice. Its creation is supported by a grant from LION Publishers, a professional association of local independent news publishers in Canada and the U.S.

Lawyers for Reporters Canada brings together a network of pro bono lawyers who may provide eligible clients with a range of legal services, including, for example, pre-publication review and legal guidance related to public-interest journalistic activities.

The program is intended to facilitate brief pro bono legal consultations of up to one hour, depending on the nature of the matter and the participating lawyer’s availability. Any legal assistance is provided at the discretion of the lawyer.

Client Eligibility

  • Newsrooms and journalists engaged in public-interest journalism
  • Require legal guidance related to journalistic activities (see Scope of Services below)
  • Operate within Canada and are reporting on matters relevant to Canada

Scope of services

Lawyers for Reporters Canada connects eligible clients with volunteer lawyers who provide pro-bono legal support related to public-interest journalism.

Depending on the nature of the inquiry and the availability of participating lawyers, support may include:

  • Pre-publication legal review: Guidance on pre-publication legal risks, including issues such as defamation, privacy, and other potential liabilities.
  • Newsgathering and reporting support: Legal guidance on issues around access to information, source protection, and investigative journalism risks.
  • Subpoenas and production orders: Assistance in responding to subpoenas, production orders, or other legal demands that may interfere with journalistic work.
  • Business and operational legal guidance: Legal advice related to newsroom operations, such as contractual or compliance matters that affect journalistic work.
  • Journalism arrest/detention: Guidance and support for journalists facing arrest, detention, or related legal challenges while reporting.
  • Employment and freelance contracts: Review and advice on employment agreements, freelance contracts and related legal matters affecting journalists.

Support is provided on a pro bono basis and is subject to client eligibility, lawyer availability, conflict check, and program scope. The program does not guarantee representation and may not be able to assist with all types of legal matters. In such cases, applicants may be referred to other appropriate resources.
