Reporting Through a Wider Lens
The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) will be partnering with different organisations to deliver the Inclusive Journalism Training Program (IJTP). The IJTP is a free learning opportunity designed to help journalists strengthen their reporting through more inclusive practices and broader perspectives.
At a time when trust in media is under pressure and newsrooms are working to reach increasingly diverse audiences, journalists need informed approaches to report with accuracy, fairness and depth. Inclusive journalism is about producing stronger reporting by broadening perspectives, challenging assumptions and ensuring stories reflect the full range of experiences within Canadian society.
Through practical training and expert guidance, participants will explore approaches to reporting that better reflect the experiences and realities of Canada’s diverse communities. The program is designed for journalists across all beats and experience levels, with a focus on building skills that can be applied immediately in day-to-day reporting.
For each iteration, the program will explore a new theme related to inclusion in journalism, in collaboration with a partner organization that will help shape the curriculum and bring specialized expertise to the training in both English and French.

The CAJ is proud to announce that it is partnering with the Trans Journalists Association (TJA) for the Inclusive Journalism Training Program 2026: Covering Trans and Gender-Diverse Communities with Care.
The CAJ and TJA will work together to design and launch a training program for journalists, to take place across Canada in 2026-2027. This collaborative program will deliver both in-person and virtual training sessions that aim to equip newsrooms and journalists across the country with best practices to produce accurate, nuanced and inclusive reporting on, and in, trans and other gender-diverse communities.
The CAJ will also build an online community for training participants, and others interested in the work, that will support Canadian gender-expansive journalists in the advancement of their careers.

Who is the IJTP program for?
The program is designed by and for working journalists from all backgrounds and experience levels.
What does the program cost?
There is no cost for the IJTP.
What is the time commitment?
As the program is in development, we can’t yet provide a precise number of hours that will be required. This level of detail will be provided at a later date.
What language will the training be offered in?
The 2026 program will include three in-person training sessions across major Canadian cities and six virtual training sessions. Three sessions will be conducted in French and six in English.

When will the program run?
