Below you will find an alphabetic list of mentors for the Fall 2024 round of the mentorship program. Each mentor has their bio, who they are looking to mentor, the languages they speak, and what kind of mentee they are looking to work with.

About: I’m a multiplatform journalist, and instructor of journalism and sports media at TMU. I have broken stories, won awards, reported on critical issues in sport and am currently a columnist at CBC Sports. My work lies at the intersections of race and gender in sport. I write and opine about justice in the sports ecosystem. The Canadian industry is changing and we need to be able to be dynamic enough to shift with it. I am a supporter of independent journalism and believe in accountability, and courage in this field.

About: I am currently the Alberta-Saskatchewan reporter for The Narwhal, where I write news, analysis and investigations on energy, climate and the environment. Prior to this, I spent six years as a journalist with CBC in Calgary and started my career at the now-defunct Fast Forward Weekly, where I rose to the rank of editor and publisher. I have experience with radio, video, investigations and the infuriating world of managing a small publication.

About: I am originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and arrived in Canada with my family at the age of 11. I spent my early years in Canada in Montreal. I studied communications at CÉGEP André-Laurent before continuing my university studies in journalism at the Université du Québec à Montréal. In 2007, in search of adventure and professional experience, I moved to Winnipeg where I learned my trade as a journalist, host and producer. I have held several positions within the public broadcaster: a weather presenter, cultural journalist, anchor of the weekend newscast, radio host and producer. For the past five years, I have hosted 6à9, Radio-Canada Manitoba’s morning show, in addition to contributing to various national programs including Bonsoir bonsoir, Empreintes, Tout inclus and Pénélope. Before joining Radio-Canada, I worked as a researcher and scriptwriter at Rivard Productions and as a journalist at the Manitoba weekly La Liberté. In 2012, I was awarded the Woman of the Year Award by the OPCC, the Organization of Congolese Professionals in Canada.

About: I spend most of my time running around with a camera (as a Video Journalist) with CTV News Montreal. Before that, I did radio, television, and web reporting with ICI Alberta in Calgary for a bit over a year. In the past, I worked with The Eastern Door in Kahnawá:ke and Kanehsatà:ke, after getting my start in the industry with the Institute for Investigative Journalism. In a nutshell, I’m passionate about the work I do and I want to share this with you.

About: I am an investigative journalist, documentary film producer, podcast host, author, and a contributing writer at The Walrus magazine. I also work with production companies and broadcasters around the world on documentary development and production. My work in print, film, and television has appeared in Texas Monthly, Maclean’s, Toronto Life, Amazon, CBC, The Weather Network, Sony Music Entertainment, and more. I am deeply passionate about multimedia narrative storytelling driven by unique characters and points of view. Before going freelance, I was a features reporter and podcast producer at Global News, a senior reporter at VICE News, and writer at Maclean’s magazine.

About: I’m a freelance photojournalist based in Halifax, N.S. I’ve worked in newspapers, wire services, and magazines for nearly 20 years—both on staff and independently. And just last year, I published a bestselling photobook/memoir with McClelland & Stewart called Leaving Good Things Behind. With opportunities shrinking for photojournalists in the Canadian journalism industry, I’ve been able to use my skillset to work with commercial clients like the Canadian Olympic Committee to sustain my journalism habit.

About: I’m a Senior Correspondent for CTV National News, based in Toronto. As an accomplished and award-winning journalist, my work includes breaking exclusive international and national stories, in-depth W5 investigations, covering wars in active conflict zones, and the Raptors 2019 championship game in Oakland California. In 2023, I reported from Ukraine, covering the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion. In 2022, I travelled to Texas to cover the tragic aftermath of the school shooting in Uvalde, and the controversial NRA convention in Houston. I also travelled to Port aux Basques, N.L. to cover the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Fiona, speaking exclusively with residents who were nearly swept out to sea amid the surge. In 2024, I received a Canadian Screen nomination for best National Reporter in Canada. In 2021, I was awarded with a National RTDNA award for Best Local Investigative News Series for my year-long investigation into the Basilian Fathers. Before joining CTV National News, I worked for CityNews and CityTV for more than 15 years where I filled virtually every role in the newsroom from reporter, to show producer to writer, documentary director, and breaking news reporter.

About: At The Globe’s Vancouver bureau, I act as a sort of foreign correspondent unpacking B.C.’s political, criminal justice, social and cultural issues for the rest of the country. I’ve become a mini expert on a wide range of subjects (hate crimes, police oversight, real estate, cannabis…) and love writing features about the people making the West Coast their home.

I’ve spent most of my career as a freelance feature writer, winning multiple national awards for my work in magazines like The Walrus and Toronto Life.

About: I am currently a producer and chief anchor at CBC/Radio-Canada in Manitoba. I’ve been a journalist for 20 years as a correspondent, reporter, presenter, and producer. I spent almost 10 years at the BBC, particularly in Africa, as a reporter, feature stories producer, and senior broadcast journalist (deputy editor-in-chief). Prior to joining CBC/Radio-Canada, I was a parliamentary correspondent in Ottawa.

About: I’m a journalist with a passion for helping people connect with the world around them by making complex stories more accessible. I currently produce Al Jazeera’s daily news podcast, The Take, where I help shape audio and video coverage of global events. Before this, I hosted and produced CBC’s Nothing is Foreign, a weekly world news show that explored international events through a non-Western lens, amplifying local perspectives. I’ve also had the chance to host and produce daily podcasts like Wait, There’s More (Global News), The Decibel (The Globe and Mail), and most recently, Front Burner (CBC). My journey started as a reporter at the Toronto Star and VICE News, covering immigration, social movements, and Canada’s role on the world stage.

About: For the past decade I have been an investigative reporter with CBC in Saskatchewan, filing stories to radio, TV and online. Much of my work has focused on people who aren’t what they appear to be. Earlier in my career, I worked as a video journalist, political reporter, TV anchor and documentary producer. I became a reporter through an unorthodox path — freelancing for a decade as a video journalist in B.C. My work has received a Canadian Screen Award, two Michener Award nominations and multiple CAJ and RTDNA awards.

About: I am an award-winning journalist and broadcaster. I was a producer and host at CBC Radio for nearly ten years and recently resigned to start my own media company, On The Line Media. I am the 2024/2025 inaugural journalism fellow at the University of Toronto’s Women and Gender Studies Institute and sit on the advisory council of Centennial College’s journalism program.

About: I spent almost four decades working with Canada’s leading national media. As a senior journalist with The Canadian Press, I executed a wide variety of assignments, including spending six months covering the war in Afghanistan. I covered national security issues, courts, social justice issues, politics and military commission proceedings in Guantanamo Bay. About: I am an award-winning senior foreign correspondent for CBC, currently posted in Jerusalem, covering the Mideast conflict. Over more than three decades with CBC, I have reported from every province and every continent, working as journalist, producer, photographer and videographer. I focused on the Asia Pacific for five years as the CBC’s Beijing Bureau Chief. Previously, I led the Middle East Bureau for four years, reporting on Syria’s civil war and winning the Canadian Screen Award for Best Reportage. I have filed from Gaza and Afghanistan, Rwanda, Argentina and North Korea. In Canada, my career started with CFPL in London and CJOH in Ottawa, continuing at CBC posts in Regina, Winnipeg and Parliament Hill.

About: I’m a Network Anchor with CBC News — hosting live coverage three hours a day, Monday-Friday, about breaking & developing news across the country, and conducting live interviews on a variety of topics. Prior to this role I was a Washington Correspondent with Global News, and have also worked as a reporter/VJ and anchor in Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Terrace, B.C. I primarily work in television, but have also done work in radio. I graduated from UBC, specializing in Political Science, and went on to get my degree in Journalism from TMU, where I now teach an Introduction to Journalism course.

About: I’m a staff journalist with The Narwhal based on Wet’suwet’en territory, in Smithers, and a solutions journalism trainer with the Solutions Journalism Network. My work combines investigative journalism, on-the-ground feature reporting and multimedia approaches to tell stories about the intersections between resource extraction, the natural world and Indigenous rights. Before my current position, I was the editor/publisher of a regional print magazine in the northwest and a freelance writer and editor for numerous publications in Canada and the U.S. I am committed to the pactices of decolonizing journalism.

About: With a career in journalism that has spanned more than 20 years, I am a reporter for CTV National News. I’m honoured to be the first Indigenous person in the history of CTV to anchor nationally. I reported on and was invited to a private audience to the historic Papal apology to Indigenous survivors of residential schools at the Vatican in Rome, as I am the daughter of a residential school survivor. I guest co-hosted for Canada’s #1 talk show, “The Social.” I am a regular speaker and moderator at Collision Conferences and Web Summit, two of the world’s biggest technology conferences. I’m a pround member of Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation in Ontario. I feel a sense of pride in breaking down barriers for First Nation people. I bring a distinct perspective to the newsroom, giving a voice to those not often heard in Canadian media.

About: I am a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and host of the acclaimed podcasts “Stolen” and “Missing & Murdered”. My work has exposed the crisis of violence in Indigenous communities and the devastating impacts of intergenerational trauma stemming from Indian Residential Schools. My podcast “Stolen: Surviving St. Michael’s” is one of the most comprehensive investigations into a single residential school in Canada. In 2023, “Stolen: Surviving St. Michael’s” was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award. Prior to joining Gimlet Media, I spent nearly two decades as a reporter and host for the CBC. I co-created and led the public broadcaster’s Indigenous Unit in 2013 and was part of a team of reporters who built a database of unsolved cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women in 2016. I am a member of the Okanese First Nation in Saskatchewan.
