Each year, as our journalism scholarship concludes, we\u2019re continually inspired by the caliber of data-driven stories submitted.<\/p>\n

The quality of work from college and university students keeps reaching new heights, and so it comes as no surprise that we\u2019re excited about this year\u2019s latest pool of talent.<\/p>\n

After carefully reviewing all eligible submissions, the Selection Jury<\/a> has chosen the recipient of the sixth annual Investintech-CAJ Journalism Scholarship.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re excited to announce this year\u2019s winning recipient is:<\/p>\n

Hope Lompe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Congratulations, Hope!<\/p>\n

Hope is in her final semester, completing a Bachelor of Journalism degree with a minor in political science at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), while working as the news reporter for The Runner, KPU\u2019s student newspaper.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also earned recognition as a recipient of the 2024 Jack Webster Student Journalism Award and received a KPU Journalism and Communications departmental award for her commitment to climate change reporting.\u00a0She has\u00a0also worked with Canada\u2019s National Observer<\/a> where her work was shared in publications such as CBC, Vancouver Sun, Times Colonist and more.<\/p>\n

Her winning submission takes an investigative look at Canada\u2019s forestry sector that has seen a rise in temporary foreign workers since 2021. Through a combination of public data from IRCC<\/a>, Excel pivot tables, Datawrapper, analysis, and interviews, Hope was able to expose and trace the hiring trend back to 2021 due to relaxed federal hiring rules in Canada\u2019s forestry sector that is normally made up of domestic workers.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what our Selection Jury<\/a> had to say about her work and why it was selected as the winning submission:<\/p>\n

\u201cHope\u2019s story was a strong example of using and analyzing data to unearth trends that may not otherwise be obvious. The submission was a truly data-driven story. Centered on a news-relevant topic, her story demonstrated all the data journalism elements needed for such a story \u2013 a solid base of evidence, detailed analysis, interviews with industry professionals, and data visualizations.<\/p>\n

The narrative was clear and careful to provide accurate context in how the data was being interpreted, which is crucial when reporting on a news story that is primarily based on data. Overall, Hope\u2019s ability to combine raw data and analysis within a compelling narrative is a prime example of what data journalists should be aiming to achieve in their stories.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n

Hope, our 2024\u20132025 scholarship winner, will receive $1,000 CAD toward her tuition, a complimentary CAJ membership for one year, and a pass to the CAJ National Annual Conference in Calgary from May 30\u201331st!<\/p>\n

Their passion and experience are vital to maintaining the quality and integrity of the scholarship.<\/p>\n
