Au sein d’une organisation à but non lucratif, le conseil d’administration et les comités décident de l’orientation des programmes et des projets, les comités et sous-comités effectuent une partie du travail lié au programme ou au projet, et le personnel, les stagiaires et autres bénévoles sont invités à effectuer des tâches liées à l’exécution et la livraison des programmes et des projets. Ce qui suit présente chacun des comités et sous-comités de l’ACJ.

Comités

The advocacy committee oversees the planning, development and execution of all advocacy for the organization. As the organization that speaks on behalf of journalists, and in their interest, on matters including source protection, freedom of information and access to information, public disclosure, and diversity of voices, the advocacy committee works tirelessly on writing statements, speaking with journalists in difficult situations, and representing the voice of journalists with government and public officials in matters of legislation and legal cases. The committee does this work through a variety of working groups of the committee:

  • AI in Journalism
  • Court Access National Initiative (CANI)
  • FOI Initiative
  • Hate and Harassment of Journalists
  • Press Freedom & Journalists’ Rights
  • Public Policy, General Legislation & Funding of Journalism
  • Wildfire/Emergency Crisis Access Initiative

Additionally, the committee oversees the work of the following subcommittees and programs:

  • Diversity Subcommittee
  • CNIPS Subcommittee (aka CNIPS Steering Committee); and its own subcommittee, the CNIPS Advisory Group/Panel
  • Code of Silence Awards
  • Annual Newsroom Diversity Survey
  • Lawyers for Reporters Canada

Work of the advocacy committee is led by the CAJ’s president, with the assistance of an appointed vice-chair. Staff provide administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee, with additional support provided by volunteers in the committee.

This committee is currently full. Volunteers for the advocacy committee must be active/working or retired journalists, professors, and/or journalism students. Those interested in joining the committee may be asked to provide a resume and/or references.

Work on this committee entails:

  • Attending scheduled meetings
  • Joining one of more working groups of the committee, working on current issues to be addressed
  • Writing draft statements as needed
  • Being available to check and respond to emails and Slack messages regularly

The awards committee oversees the planning, development and execution of the annual CAJ awards program, including seeking out judges, vetting awards entries, and creating communication pieces. The committee also approves CAJ involvement in fellowships, awards and any other competitions outside of the CAJ awards program. The work of the committee is led by a CAJ director and assisted by an appointed vice-chair. Staff provide administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee, with additional support by committee volunteers.

Meetings are held quarterly for program development and planning, but with much of the program roll-out work being done by email. Additional meetings may be added as needed, particularly during/around the time of an active program.

This committee is currently full. Volunteers on this committee are ineligible for submitting entries to the awards program in any year in which they participate in committee work.

  • Assisting with vetting of the entries received

The communications committee oversees the deployment of all messaging from the CAJ. It gathers information from all programs, projects, and committees and ensures that messaging falls in line with the CAJ communications policy and plan. The purview of the committee relates to all socials’ platforms, the CAJ website, news releases/posts made online, CAJ newsletters and much of the delivery methods of internal communications within the organization. Work of the committee is led by the CAJ’s vice-president external and assisted by an appointed vice-chair. Staff play a vital role in the work of the committee in not just providing administrative support to the committee but executing all communications pieces.

This committee is currently reviewing its needs for additional volunteers. Volunteers on this committee must be active on at least one social media platform (not X), and be committed to daily/as needed engagement with the committee.

Work on this committee entails:

  • Attending scheduled meetings
  • Monitoring of one assigned social media platform
  • Available to assist with or review of writing of social media and newsletter messaging
  • Being available to check and respond to emails and Slack messages regularly

The professional development committee oversees the planning, development and execution of any CAJ events and professional development opportunities that occur at both the national and regional levels. As part of this, the committee oversees the work of its varying subcommittees and programs:

  • Conference subcommittee
  • Mentorship Subcommittee
  • Online Learning Subcommittee
  • Annual national conference
  • Semi-annual mentorship program
  • Inside Scoop
  • Canadian climate journalism training program
  • Inclusive journalism training program
  • Unplugged

The committee also reviews requests for CAJ contributions to third-party events presented by one of our partners, and supports event and PD opportunity planning efforts for local and regional initiatives, often done through our Regional Professional Development Fund. The work of the committee is led by a CAJ director and assisted by an appointed vice-chair. Staff provide administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee.

This committee is currently assessing its need for volunteers. Volunteers on this committee must be committed to aiding with the regional growth of professional development opportunities by acting as liaisons with « on the ground » folks who are planning events. Volunteers on this committee may or may not be working on the various subcommittees that are the responsibility of the PD committee.

  • Bringing creativity and ideas forward to help with growth of professional development opportunities
  • Being available to check and respond to emails and Slack messages regularly

The finance committee oversees the financial needs of the CAJ such as reviewing the monthly finance information sent by staff, finalizing the budget prepared by staff and the treasurer, discussing and providing approvals on unbudgeted or over-budget items, and making recommendations to the board about finance-related issues. Additionally, the committee oversees the work done by the fundraising subcommittee. The work of the committee is led by the CAJ’s treasurer and assisted by an appointed vice-chair. Staff provide administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee, but also complete all day-to-day financial tasks for the association.

Meetings are held quarterly.

This committee is currently seeking one volunteer. Volunteers on this committee must be a professional or student member, and should have some working knowledge of finances or non-profit financial management.

Work on this committee entails:

  • Attending scheduled meetings
  • Being available to check and respond to emails and Slack messages regularly
  • Developing an in-depth working knowledge of the organization’s Finance Policy

The membership committee oversees the membership needs of the CAJ such as reviewing membership applications as per the membership eligibility guidelines and the membership management policy, and reviews membership perks and benefits. Any changes to the offerings of membership (pricing, perks, eligibility, etc) is referred to the board of directors for approval prior to implementation. Additionally, the committee is responsible for the oversight of any membership caucuses formed within the organization, one of which is currently under development:

  • Indigenous Journalists’ Caucus
  • Newcomer Journalists in Canada Caucus
  • Journalism Professors’ Caucus

The work of the committee is led by the CAJ’s vice-president internal (or another director) and assisted by an appointed vice-chair. Staff provide not only administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee but also perform all day-to-day tasks related to membership intake and management.

Sous-comités

The Canadian News Industry Peer Support (CNIPS) subcommittee (aka CNIPS steering committee) oversees the planning, development and execution of the CNIPS program, a first-of-its-kind program in North America. The work of the subcommittee includes seeking out, vetting and facilitating training for peer supporters, organizing peer support group events, and providing a modality for journalists in Canada to reach out to a peer supporter. The CNIPS subcommittee’s work is overseen by the advocacy committee. The CNIPS subcommittee oversees the work and guidance of the CNIPS advisory panel. The work of the committee is led by a CAJ director and assisted by an appointed vice-chair. Staff provide administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee.

This subcommittee is currently full. Volunteers for this committee are typically key members of the peer support/mental health field within the journalism community.

The conference subcommittee (commonly referred to as the conference committee) oversees the planning, development and execution of the annual national conference. The work of the Conference subcommittee is overseen by the Professional Development committee. The work of the committee is led by one or more CAJ directors. Staff provide administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee, including aiding in all content planning support, coordinating all logistics for the events and managing the internal and external pieces related to event roll out. Additionally, the subcommittee oversees the working of the content planning working group, made of up of volunteer journalists who work in the region where the upcoming conference is to be held. This working group provides ideas/suggestions and labour towards the content aspects of the conference, supporting by CAJ staff.

Meetings are held quarterly for the overarching planning work of current and future annual national conferences. Meetings of the content planning working group for specific upcoming conference content planning are held on a decreasing basis from weekly to monthly, starting in October and ending two months before the conference, typically held in May/June each year.

This subcommittee is currently seeking one volunteer for on-going planning work. Volunteers on this committee who are considered « on-going volunteers » will not only be working on the upcoming annual national conference, regardless of the host city, but will also work on the year-round planning efforts to establish various components of future conferences such as planning cities/locations, venues and other high-level conference-related matters.

The diversity subcommittee primarily oversees the planning, development and execution of the annual Diversity Survey. Additionally, the subcommittee discusses and oversees aspects of the organization that relate to ensuring that programs and offerings meet the organization’s diversity goals. The diversity subcommittee’s work is overseen by the advocacy committee. The work of the committee is led by a CAJ director and assisted by an appointed vice-chair. Staff provide not only administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee but also perform all tasks related to the roll-out, delivery and execution of the annual diversity survey.

This subcommittee is currently seeking one volunteer. Volunteers on this committee may be asked to assist with diversity survey work, reviewing the diversity survey report, and any other work related to the work of the subcommittee.

Work on this committee also entails:

  • Bringing creativity and ideas forward to help with growth and promotion of the diversity survey
  • Helping the subcommittee to view the organization from a macro lens to ensuring diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and front and centre in the organization’s work and offerings
  • Being available to check and respond to emails and Slack messages regularly

The fundraising subcommittee primarily oversees the work needing to seek out, obtain and secure funding for various programs and initiatives of the organization. This can be done through sponsorship, advertising, grant applications and any other modality which the board of directors approves for external funding sources. The work of the committee is led by the CAJ president and treasurer. Staff provide administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee.

This subcommittee is currently seeking one volunteer. Volunteers on this committee must have a passion for fundraising and must understand the unique limitations that the CAJ’s fundraising policy adheres to.

Work on this committee also entails:

  • Bringing creativity and ideas forward to help with the financial growth of the organization through external sources
  • Being available to check and respond to emails and Slack messages regularly

The mentorship subcommittee oversees the planning, development and execution of the mentorship program, which runs twice per year. The work of the committee includes vetting and seeking out possible mentors, vetting mentorship applications, and approving communication pieces for the program. The mentorship subcommittee’s work is overseen by the Professional Development committee. The work of the committee is led by a CAJ director and assisted by an appointed vice-chair. Staff provide not only administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee, but also oversee development and delivery/execution of each round of the program.

Staff provide not only administrative support to the committee by executing all work and initiatives decided upon by the committee, but also oversee development and delivery/execution of its programs.

The CAJ is currently developing multiple caucuses to help bring members together with similar interests. The following caucuses are under development and their launches will be announced as details are available. Any caucuses already launched are also subsequently listed.
