CAJ SASK LUNCH & LEARN: MMIWG MEDIA CALLS TO JUSTICE

The Saskatchewan chapter of the Canadian Association of Journalists alongside CBC Saskatchewan in Regina is hosting a learning event regarding the MMIWG media calls to justice. This event takes place Nov. 4, 2019, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at CBC Saskatchewan.

The MMIWG report has specific calls to justice for the media. This event will feature a panel of Indigenous journalists who have experience covering this -- Betty Ann Adam and Merelda Fiddler -- and family member, Terry-Lynn McNab, who has experience working with the media.

We are hoping to have journalists (both working and training) to have a better understanding of what it means to:

  • “Support Indigenous people sharing their stories, from their perspectives, free of bias, discrimination, and false assumptions, and in a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive way.”

  • “Take proactive steps to break down the stereotypes that hypersexualize and demean Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people, and to end practices that perpetuate myths that Indigenous women are more sexually available and ‘less worthy’ than non-Indigenous women because of their race or background.”
