July 11, 2022- The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) is pleased to announce that 199 media outlets have committed to participating in the 2022 Canadian Newsroom Diversity Survey, a landmark annual snapshot of the country’s media demographics.
The survey measures the race and gender of journalists working in newsrooms nationwide. Last year, the CAJ collected data on 3,873 journalists working at 209 media outlets. So far this year, 143 media outlets have completed the survey ahead of the Friday, July 29 deadline, and another 56 news organizations have committed to providing data on the composition of their newsrooms.
“Media outlets nationwide are stepping up and releasing data on important questions like how many women and non-binary people they employ, and how many Black and Indigenous journalists are in their ranks,” said CAJ president Brent Jolly. “We hope that other newsrooms will understand the important role this survey plays in making Canadian media a more equitable space and be inspired to participate in this critical project.”
The 2021 Canadian Newsroom Diversity Survey found a distinct lack of diversity in Canadian newsrooms. White journalists tended to hold more senior and stable jobs, with white journalists holding 81.9 per cent of supervisor roles and 79.6 per cent of top three leadership positions. Approximately 90 per cent of outlets that participated had no Latin, Middle Eastern or Mixed Race journalists on staff. About 80 per cent had no Black or Indigenous journalists.
The 2022 data will be compared with the 2021 data to show how the Canadian media workforce is evolving in the wake of widespread industry commitments for change.
A full list of media outlets that have completed the survey can be found below. The CAJ wishes to particularly thank executives at Torstar, SaltWire and Overstory Media Group who have most recently committed to filling out the 2022 Canadian Newsroom Diversity Survey for all of their newsrooms.
The chain-wide commitments are particularly helpful for the CAJ as a volunteer-driven nonprofit. Since March, over 100 CAJ volunteers have contacted editors-in-chief at newsrooms nationwide to ask them to fill out the survey. Getting a commitment for a whole chain allows CAJ volunteers to focus their efforts on other newsrooms with the hopes of getting even more media outlets to fill out the survey this year than last year. Torstar, SaltWire and Overstory, for example, collectively own 89 publications.
A full list of all participating outlets thus far can be found below.
“We appreciate this is not an easy exercise for newsroom leaders,” said Jolly. “But it is a critical endeavour that speaks not only to the critical importance of transparency but also presents a distinct opportunity to critically reflect on the progress we are making across our industry – both for now and for the future.”
